The difference is that in AI maps
the loadingscreen is there, and the AI is placed in the
map by default.

Normal maps have a bugged loadingscreen and the AI
is placed in the map via the launcher. (I think)

If Im wrong please correct me.

Correct. the AI maps had the AI added before launching the game. Now that launchers have the ability to add AI at launch (and with that, the option for race selection) the need for AI hacked maps is no longer necessary. Also the loading screen isn't necessarily bugged. I believe the loading screens were intended to be added by the actual Starcraft 2 application. Not necessarily written to the map. but the AI hacked maps, do have the loading screen added into them. This is why the default blizz maps don't have them.
