Title: Tutorial: For those STILL confused!! Beginner's Guide!
Post by: ThaKissick on March 03, 2010, 03:29:13 AM
So, you have been browsing this forum and are still a little bit confused. . ___________________________________________________________________________

Here, I will try to explain, IN THE SIMPLEST POSSIBLE MANNER, the steps to Install SC2 Beta using the LazyLaunch Loader, and some additional information about Maps/Cache/AI.
___________________________________________________________________________

Table of Contents:

1.) Installing the SC2 Beta Game Client

.... What did I just install?

2.) Patching to latest SC2 Beta Game Client version

.... How to patch to latest version

3.) How to Watch Replays

        .... Cache

.... Bypassing the Login screen to Main Menu

        .... Replays

4.) How to PLAY! (AI Information and Map Information)

.... What can I actually play?

.... Step One is to get a Map...

.... Step Two is to download LazyLauncher

.... Step Three is to download as many AI as you would like

.... How to choose which AI I want to play?

__________________________________________________________________________

1.) Installing the SC2 Beta Game Client:

The easiest way I have found is to download the client from http://www.fileshack.com (http://www.fileshack.com)

It is on the main page towards the middle in a list of Top Downloads.

After you download the installer, run it by clicking Installer.exe and install anywhere (I recommend the default of C:\Program Files\Starcraft II Beta). It will install into a folder called Starcraft II Beta.

For the purposes of this tutorial, I will assume our main drive is C: and that we installed in the following directory:

C:\Program Files\Starcraft II Beta

SO, what did you just install? Obviously, you installed some files into the above folder.

It is important to note, however, that 2 other important folders were installed.

** PLEASE ENABLE HIDDEN FILES/FOLDERS AT THIS TIME ** If you do not know how to do this, use google and search: how to view hidden files and folders in WindowsXP/7/Whichever version you have

- The first is:

For WindowsXP:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\Local Settings\Application Data\Blizzard Entertainment

For Windows 7:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\AppData\Local\Blizzard Entertainment

Make sure you replace the YourName in red above to the name of your user account.

This folder contains information about the maps, and and contains the maps themselves. Don't do anything here for now, we will talk about Cache in one of the next topics. Just make note of the location.

- The second is:
C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\My Documents\StarCraft II Beta

This folder contains more information about Maps and Cache. There should be a Maps folder, a GameLogs folder and  Replays folder, as long as a couple other files. Don't do anything here either yet, just note the location.

2.) Patching to the latest Game Client version:

To do this, simply double click Starcraft II.exe

It will automatically install the latest patch. After the game starts just go ahead and close it for now.

3.) How to watch replays:

Cache: First of all, if you have not modified anything as of yet, and have a clean install, then you have the latest version of the Cache folder. The folder I am referring to is:

For WindowsXP:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\Local Settings\Application Data\Blizzard Entertainment

For Windows 7:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\AppData\Local\Blizzard Entertainment

I constantly check http://www.sc2win.com/category/news/ (http://www.sc2win.com/category/news/)

If there is a new Cache file update, they will post it there. If they do post a new updated Cache file, simply replace it with the one in the folders mentioned above.

Bypassing the Login Screen: In order to watch replays you have to get to the Main Menu that allows you to click on the replay interface button. Unless you have a Beta Account, you can't reach this menu without a bypass.

Step One: Download a bypass solution. Download this torrent: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5376948 (http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5376948)

Once you have that downloaded, find the SWF folder inside the folder you just downloaded.

Place the SWF folder inside C:\Program Files\StarCraft II Beta\Battle.net

The final steps to watching replays: This tutorial explains how to watch replays from the official SC2 Beta that you can download. I do not explain how to watch replays of AI maps here, but there are many tutorials on how to do this about the forums.

First you are going to want to download some replays! I recommend

http://www.sc2win.com/category/starcraft-2-replays/ (http://www.sc2win.com/category/starcraft-2-replays/)

to find some good replays. Download these replay files to the folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\My Documents\StarCraft II Beta\Replays\Multiplayer

Now, to watch them, run the game as you normally would, using Starcraft II.exe

If you are stuck on the Login screen, and do not see the Main Menu, you did something wrong regarding the Bypassing. Please refer back to this step.

When the Main Menu loads, click the little video camera icon in the top left of the screen to access the replays interface.

Here you should be able to browse to the Multiplayer section, and select the replay you wish to view.

Three things can happen at this point: If you get the **TEMP** error, there is something wrong with your

C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\Local Settings\Application Data\Blizzard Entertainment\Battle.net\Cache

folder. I will not get into great detail about this but basically this is how the Cache folder works: If you want to watch replays from offical SC2 Beta, you need the LATEST OFFICIAL CACHE FOLDER which can be found at the site I linked above about Cache. If you are trying to view replays of yourself, or other replays from AI matches, you need to download a HACKED AI CACHE VERSION. I will not get into this here, but it can be easily found on this forum.

The second thing that can happen is that the replay starts to load, but then says Replay Desync! This occurs when there is something wrong with the Mods folder inside

C:\Program Files\Starcraft II Beta

If you are experiencing this error, please scroll down to the topic about AI and the Mods folder. If you have not installed any AI as of yet you will not have this error.

The third thing that can happen is you watch the replay. Enjoy =)

4.) Playing against AI and Map information:
** PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT MODIFY/OVERWRITE/REPLACE THE MODS FOLDER WITHOUT MAKING A COPY OF IT FIRST! THIS IS IMPORTANT!! IT IS NOT JUST A SAFETY STEP IT IS AN ACTUAL STEP NEEDED FOR EVERYTHING TO FUNCTION CLEANLY - PLEASE RIGHT NOW MAKE A COPY OF THE MODS FOLDER AND CALL IT 'ORIGINAL MODS FOLDER' **

What can you actually play right now? What you can play right now are AI opponents that are custom coded by real people. Please do not expect to be playing a fully functional 'computer' opponent, but realize that what you are playing is a computer opponent who only knows how to do the things users have programmed them to do. You can not play online in any way shape or form, and neither can you in any way play others through LAN.

Now, the next step is to get some maps. There is no special place you need to put the maps, but I like to put them inside the

C:\Program Files\StarCraft II Beta\

folder. No need to create an additional directory but you can if you want.

There are several map packs available for download:
http://www.multiupload.com/7YY40566LH (http://www.multiupload.com/7YY40566LH)

and others around in the forum. Despite what some say, you DO NOT usually need to change your Cache folder to match the AI maps, however you may need to do this. Usually, the latest Cache folder which you should have if you did this tutorial correctly works for everything.

Another site I get maps from is: http://www.nibbits.com/sc2/maps/ (http://www.nibbits.com/sc2/maps/)

The maps are pretty self explanatory.. for example if the map is something like Lost Temple AI (1v1) that means this map is Lost Temple and supports 1 AI opponent. If it said Lost Temple AI 3 way FFA or something like this it would mean that it is you and 3 other AI opponents that are flagged as FFA ( in other words they wont team up with eachother ).

Now that you have some AI enabled maps, you next need to download LazyLauncher v.2

http://www.mediafire.com/?mon3ntwhit2 (http://www.mediafire.com/?mon3ntwhit2)

All you need to do with the extracted files is extract the file lazylaunch2.exe into your

C:\Program Files\Starcraft II Beta

folder. At this point you do not need to do anything else with the loader, just put it in there for now.

Now to download some AIs. Remember how I told you to create a copy of the Mods folder in your StarCraft II Beta directory? I hope you did it.**Before I give links to the AI's I would like to explain something.Every time you download a new AI, they will give u a new Mods folder, and tell you to replace your current Mods folder with it to enable thatAI. This is why you have a back up of your original Mods folder. Youcan download 4 different AI versions, and name them, for instance,Original Mods Folder, StarCrack AI Mods, Goosie AI Mods, and Mods. Donot simply replace the Mods folder, but rename the one supplied withthe AI you downloaded, and then move it into your game directory. Thisallows you to switch between different AIs. For example, to watchreplays you need to use the original Mods folder, so you would use theMods folder in there already. If you want to use the Goosie AI, youwould rename your Mods folder to Mods-Original or something like that, and then rename your Goosie AI folder to Mods. Then if you wanted tochange to StarCrack AI, you would rename your Mods folder back toGoosie AI, and then rename your StarCrack AI folder to Mods.
IN SUMMARY: The game loads the Mods folder every time. All you need todo is rename which AI version you want to play to Mods and it will loadthat one.

Here are some links to the popular AIs that are out right now:

StarCrack AI:
http://darkblizz.org/Forum2/ai-scripts/starcrack-ai-official-thread/ (http://darkblizz.org/Forum2/ai-scripts/starcrack-ai-official-thread/)

Goosie AI:
http://darkblizz.org/Forum2/ai-scripts/yet-another-'hard'-ai-mod-(all-races-no-cheating (http://darkblizz.org/Forum2/ai-scripts/yet-another-'hard'-ai-mod-(all-races-no-cheating)!)/

So, after you have downloaded as many AI as you would like, you simplyrename the Mods folder in your game directory to the AI you wish toplay.

After that, you double click lazylaunch2.exe. It will prompt you for amap to play on - obviously you have to select one of the AI enabledmaps that you downloaded. After this, the game should load, and youshould be able to play the AI.

Please post any questions here, BUT DO A SEARCH FIRST!!!!!  >:(

Yeah, i cant find it anywhere either.  I also have no idea how to install a torrent file.  I downloaded and installed something that said it could fix it...but it'll cost 30$$ to actually fix it...not spending that on it.

You need to download utorrent to download/install torrent links. Utorrent is free and always will be. That 30 dollar thing must of been an ad or a scam.

Find utorrent at utorrent.com

Sweet, so I'm not alone after all.

Nope, but I dunno if its a good or bad thing lol.

I've tried getting SC2 to work many times from different launchers, different AIs, different folder replacements/additions and none of them seem to work so far. Im beginning to think that even though my specs mean i should be able to run the game, they don't or just that Odin has taken it upon himself to smite me with no starcraft till the end of time.

Haha...yeah... I've tried everything pretty much.  Reinstalled it 3 times...never worked.  Used different launchers...didn't work.  Tried every step in every way possible and didn't work.  It sucks...
Do you have Vista?

Yeah man I do have Vista. Im hoping that isn't the root of our problem  ???

Surely it would be flagged up big and bold somewhere if there was a flaw that meant Vista could not run it though right? I see this tutorial is set up for XP and 7 only but I was hoping that was just because of the directories being different from XP compared to Vista/7

Well, i do have vista...and haven't updated to windows 7 (it should be free, but i hear it sucks dick).  Since not a lot of people are experiencing our problem...maybe it is vista.
If anyone else has vista and its working fine for them....let us know.

Ive just started poking around the battle.net forums and it should play fine on Vista (makes sense to not cast aside the huge market that is Vista users)

Well I'm just thinking that maybe something happens when your downloading the patches that mess it up for the launcher...since i did have to download the torrent file.  Maybe that has something to do with it...being that it came from a torrent file.

Oh, or maybe its something in the "versions" folders...something that was added extra that shouldnt have been there.
I tried getting rid of the some of the stuff in each of the files and tried to get it working...but nothing worked.
For someone who has it working...what is inside your "base" folders that are inside the "versions" folder?

Or possibly a firewall/security settings on the files?
I really want to figure this shit out...

Wait, i think i know how to fix it.  Uninstall it again completely and reinstall it all over again.  You dont have to redownload the maps or AI, but after you install everything (including all of the patches)... DELETE your battle.net folder AND your older patch folders completely.  (if you want to watch replays that means u cant delete the old patch folders...but im not sure that it will work unless you delete them (or you can try and move them to another folder))

In the OP, do you think you could upload your original MODS folder just as an online backup?
